Tower Hamlets Summer University (THSU) gives young people such as myself the chance to become a peer motivator, allowing us to work and interact with other young people outside of school and become pillars of the community.  A good peer motivator is someone who can work diligently and co-operatively as part of a team, someone who can take responsibility for the actions of others as well as their own, someone who breeds confidence, someone who is self motivated and, most importantly, someone with a big smile as the THSU is all about having fun. I very much enjoyed my work on the Summer university this year and would recommend the experience to anyone.

A particular memory that I have is of the Summer University Launch Event 2000.  The launch provided everything from speeches by Millennium Reward Recipients to dancing to jazz and rap music.  With hosts Professor Roderick Floud, provost of London Guildhall University, Rt. Reverend John Setamu, Bishop of Stepney and Rex Hall (Trustees) and with the special guest Chris Smith, Secretary of state for Culture, it was clear that this was not an event to be missed.

I had a role to play, alongside other peer motivators.  It was our job to thank all the funders and operational/delivery partners who made the scheme financially possible.  Of the many companies involved in sponsorship here are just a few; London Weekend Television, Royal Shakespeare Company, Morpeth School, Half Moon Theatre and York Hall sports Centre.

The event was a credit to all involved showing Tower Hamlets at its best.  Morpeth Jazz band and the Bishop Challoner Dancers were just two of the highlights of this truly memorable evening.

Michael Breen from Oaklands School is one of a number of students from across the borough that have volunteered to be a peer motivator.  In this article Michael describes his role as a peer motivator and tells us about a special event which he and his associates recently attended.
